Dr. Felipe Arizon Gómez de la Bárcena - Partner


Credentials: Managing partner of Arizon Abogados S.L.P. and the head of the shipping and trade team. At the age of 35 Felipe Arizon became a Doctor in English Law. He obtained his doctorate degree while he was leading for eight full-time years the  running of a law firm as founding partner. He has been practising law since 1998.

He is an acclaimed Barrister before Spanish Courts; High Courts; Appeal Courts, and Supreme Courts, matching his Court appearances with outstanding records.  According to The Legal 500 Felipe Arizon "is well liked and supported by the main players of the Spanish market. He has an astounding knowledge of English Law".

Felipe holds a Ph.D in English Law at the Univesity of Newcastle upon Tyne (England, 2008) in recognition of a thesis entitled "The Enforceability of the Letter of Indemnity in the Context of Shipping" and a LL.M. in maritime and commercial law at Southampton University (England, 1998). He has been a Visiting Scholar at the University of Tulane-New Orleans, U.S., 2006. He holds a Law degree from the University of Malaga (Spain, 1996) and was a trainee at Directorate General of Transport at the European Commission in Brussels.

Dr. Arizon  acts before many international and domestic arbitration forums including ICC, Gafta, Fosfa, CAP and RSA. He is regular contributor to various international and Spanish publications in the field of commercial law, carriage of goods, insurance and arrest of ships. He is a regular contributor to the Lloyd's List of London as well as to many other publications. Author: "Ship arrests in practice" Spain chapter, Netcorporate, Brussels 2004-11. Dr. Arizon is lecturer for the Spanish State Institute for International Trade on agency, franchise, transfer of technology, distribution, international and domestic sale contracts. He has lectured widely in Spain and abroad, inter alia, in England (Newcastle University; Lloyd's Maritime Academy), Russia, Ukraine, The Netherlands, France, and Turkey. He has been engaged on seminars at the Nautical Institute (England). Dr. Arizon is permanent counsel of both the Ship Agent  and Port Operators Association of Malaga and of the Malaga Custom’s Agents Bar.

He is member to the International Bar Association, supporting member of the LMAA, member of the ASCAME's working commissions, of the Port Services Commission of the Malaga Port Authority.

Felipe's recent cases of importance have included the Spanish Supreme Court ruling on MT Bitland's cassation appeal where he represented the shipowners and the Master; MV Iran Hamzeh's collision at Carboneras terminal where he acted on behalf of the shipowners; MV MSC Shenzhen's collision at Algeciras Dry-dock on behalf of the shipyard; MV Doxa D before arbitration in Paris where he acted for the shippers; drafting various very complex distribution contracts for commodities, arrests  of ships under Spanish law, a competition law case, and several high profile litigations cases in Spain arising from sale of goods contracts.
